An extremely rare issue in attractive condition, with a similar design to certain silver hexagrams of Constantinople. None recorded in Dumbarton Oaks. Signed the 8th Indicitional year, this could correspond to two years. During this time the Persians had swept across the Eastern provinces of the Byzantine Empire; capturing great cities and centres of wealth such as Antioch, Emesa, Damascus, Caesarea in Palestine and even Jerusalem! Around the year 619, Heraclius began taking precious metals and other wealth from the church in order to be melted down to strike coins, such as the silver hexagrams with which this coin shares a similar design.
This is the period of the restoration of the Byzantine Empire (630-636) and celebrations at the reconquest of Jerusalem and the return of the True Cross (630), but also the start of the first Arab raids into Byzantine territory (end of 633). As only Heraclius' eldest son is depicted (Heraclius Constantine) this suggests that this coin was produced in the first period and probably in celebration of the Emperor's Decennalia (10th year of his reign). The more westerly mints continued to operate normally around this time, in spite of the invasions of the Persians. Perhaps this design was meant to maintain a strong imperial facade in the western provinces, and may have been struck just prior to the Persians siege and occupation of Alexandria in 619. However it is also exciting to consider that this may have been struck in commemoration of the restoration of the Empire and the reverse design may pay homage to the True Cross!
